Security Cameras In Short Term Vacation Rentals
Security Cameras and Short Term Vacation Rentals
We’ve had some problems and questions arise from some of our owners about security cameras recently. This post is an attempt to explain the policies around security cameras in short term vacation rental properties.
Currently, it’s illegal to place cameras inside your vacation property. Period. It’s important to maintain the privacy of your renters and avoid violating your legal obligations. The use of surveillance cameras around the outside of your home is technically legal. However, one of our county health inspector recently told us he may not license a house with cameras outside unless they are disconnected.
In addition, companies such as VRBO and Airbnb, require all property owners to notify their guests when they have cameras or other surveillance systems throughout the property. Airbnb also requires property owners to disclose if any active recording is taking place. If the homeowner fails to comply, the guest may receive a full refund or free cancellation for the reservation.
Lastly, based on my personal experience and the experience of several owners we work with, cameras can drive you really crazy. Sometimes you’re better off not knowing the strange things renters do or the schedules they keep. We strongly encourage you to remove all cameras from your property if you currently have them. Guests go to cabins in the woods to get away and enjoy privacy. They really don’t like cameras around when they are on vacation. I suspect you probably would not either.
